In 1847, one of the first scopes to be developed in Lynchburg was a three-in-one piece telescope known as the “Peregrine.” This instrument based its design on an earlier design by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Pierre Lalande. The Peregrine had a combined eyepiece and objective lens with a focuser that allowed for magnification up to 20x. In addition, the telescope used two sidereal guides that made it possible to track celestial objects without having to rely on astrology or other reading glasses. This instrument quickly became popular in Lynchburg because it was easy to use and offered excellent zoom capabilities. Over time, more and more scopes were created using this same basic design, making Lynchburg one of the most prolific astronomical cities in America. Lynchburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 24,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lynchburg County. The historic downtown area and much of rural areas are now part of the University City area. The first permanent English settler in what is now Lynchburg was Captain John Smith in 1753, who named it "Newport". In 1607, Sir George Moncrieffe granted a patent to Nicholas-Jacques de Lancey for an exclusive trade with the Indians on the James River. This early development may have been due to Colonel Edmund Randolph's efforts as Secretary of State in King James II's government to secure grants from upper Virginians for new settlements in this region. In 1611, General Edward Cornwallis discovered an overland route from Jamestown to Virginia through present-day Northumberland County and made landfall at what is now called Gloucester Point on July 12, 1611 near modern day Petersburg. On July 20th he reported his findings back east to London where Parliament passed a bill granting Royal Assent for two colonies - one located on each side of the Potomac River - which became Virginia and Maryland respectively; both were created as British colonies because they contained large amounts of land that could not be patented or sold outright by their original proprietors/holders. Lt.-Gov.-General Peter Minuit had already started planning for Jamestown's future when Cornwallis' landing occurred so all planning ceased until after his visit; however, some planks of the capital's construction may have been based upon information gained from Cornwalliss' stay in VA during this time period On October 4th 1611 Captains John Smith and Edward Hungerford sailed upriver from Portsmouth (now Hampton Roads) under command of Governor Berkeley with supplies and provisionsladen bark " Discovery ".
