Lynchburg is a town in Virginia and the capital of Lynchburg County. The population was 51,898 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Richmond metropolitan area. The name "Lynchburg" comes from James Lynch who settled there in 1775 and developed what is now known as Downtown. The first post office was established in 1781, and the present one was built in 1873. The city of Lynchburg proper began to form in the early 1800s when white settlers began moving into what is now West Virginia from eastern Virginia. In 1802, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry destroyed much of eastern Virginias'internal government and stirred up secessionist sentiment throughout southern Virginia which then led to increased immigration to what were then newly formed Lynchburg County.
