Lynchburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lynchburg County. Lynchburg was founded in 1735 by James Robertson and built on land grant from Lord Fairfax. The town's first permanent settler was John Lynch, who arrived in 1739. In 1746, James Robertson's brother-in-law, Colonel William Byrd II, donated land to the town for military purposes. In 1801–02, General Robert Ewell erected a brick courthouse and jail in honor of Ulysses S. Grant during his brief but disastrous invasion of Virginia. The town grew rapidly with the influx of settlers and entrepreneurs over the next decade; by 1810 it had a population of 10,000 people. By 1820 it had reached 20,000 residents and became an important cotton center due to its location near several major rivers (the Potomac River and Shenandoah River). In 1832 John Quincy Adams moved his family to Lynchburg from Quincy Village on the north side of Charlottesville while he served as President of America; they remained there until their death in 1844. During his term as president (1849–51), Adams established two national banks in Lynchburg – one opened by himself on February 4th and another opened by Secretary Chase on March 3rd – both within weeks of each other after passage through Congress of legislation authorizing such institutions The largest single employer in Lynchburg during the late 19th century was what would later be known as American Tobacco Company; other large employers included Coca Cola Bottling Company (1905), American Electric Railway (1886), Anheuser Busch Brewery (1900), American Telephone & Telegraph Company (1912), IBM Research Laboratories (1946) – all located adjacent to or inside what is now called “American Tobacco Center” buildings on Belvidere Avenue between Fourth Street and Fifth Street NE.. Many early industrialists including George Washington Carver and James Buchanan Whipple were also residents or founders of Lynchburg businesses including Wacoal Shoes Manufacturing Company which manufactured shoes outboard using salt water lapping methods then dried them outdoors before shipping them across country
