Cotton plantations closed beginning in 1911 with soil exhaustion from years of heavy crop production; as a result, many small farmers moved away from Lynchburg to find new sources of income. Many large factories closed during World War I but reopened after hostilities stopped; accordingly, industry declined between 1920 and 1940%.
