In 1814, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest led an attack against Richmond, resulting in over 100 deaths including many officers and men of Nathanael Greene's army (). In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at First Manassas Junction northeast of Lynchburg while they were marching south to join General Robert Ewell's army at Bull Run Bridge; Early killed nine Union soldiers before surrendering on April 9th 1865. As a result of this attack/surrender, military action ceased between Confederate forces and Union troops throughout much of central Virginia until 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived with his army near Appomattox Court House following Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 6th 1865. However, much like Reconstruction policies which took hold across America following the end of World War II – which saw large numbers African Americans move into white areas – racial segregation still prevailed within most southern states even after Reconstruction ended seventy years later; black people continued to be treated very differently than whites throughout much of America’s history until progress began to be made during the late 1960s through social movements such as civil rights organizations such as Black Panther Party which fought for equal rights for all Americans regardless their race or ethnicity
