Lynchburg is a small town in Virginia, United States. The population was 13,641 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Albemarle County. In 1747, Colonel James Lynch founded Lynchburg as an agricultural community on the southern edge of present-day Charlottesville. The first permanent settler was George Washington and his party in 1774. After a series of failed attempts to establish a permanent settlement, Washington in 1779 purchased 8 miles (12 km) of land from Nicholas Easton for £2 5s 0d and named it after himself, George Lynchburg Manor. Over time, other European families also bought parcels or tracts of land within what is now Albemarle County; these settlers created what are now some of the most distinct neighborhoods in Charlottesville: Turtle Point near downtown (developed in 1856 by Captain David Evans), Hampden Square to the east and west of University Circle (developed between 1892 and 1907 by Captains John Wertz and Alfred Vail), Germantown Heights to the north-central part of town (founded by German immigrants in 1814), Arlington Heights to the south-central part of town (founded by Englishmen in 1800) and North Kingstown Village on Newport News Island (originally called Hampton Roads). The original townsite was surrounded by fields that were used for crops such as tobacco, corn, wheat, peas and beans; later there were gardens which produced fruits such as apples, pears and grapes. A sawmill operated here from 1696 until 1707; taxable profits generated from this business helped finance British military campaigns during the American Revolution. Commercial development occurred along both sides of Broad Street until about 1830 when construction began on VA Route 1 which would become one of America's most important commercial corridors
