Stephenson, started work on a firearms business. 1872- 1875 - A blacksmith named Isaac P. Hawkins opened his shop in what is now the alley between Main and Second Streets. Hawkins was the only blacksmith in Lynchburg at that time. 1877- 1879 - George Waddell began working at the Stevenson Armsmithy as a Brazoria County Jailer's Mate. In 1879, Waddell became an armsmith and his shop was moved to First Street SE in downtown Lynchburg. Waddell continued making pistols until 1893 when he retired from business after fifty years of experience. In 1886, William Saws finished building the first sawmill on present day Third Street SW in town. This mill produced lumber for construction beginning in 1887 and continuing until 1923 when it was replaced by the present day Dunn Lumber Mill which still operates today!
Lynchburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 113 at the 2010 census. Lynchburg is the county seat of Rappahannock County. It is part of the Richmond– Petersburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Lynchburg was made on July 12,1777 by Captain John Smith and his men when they explored the area for a new landing place for the British Army during their campaign against Washington's Continental army. After surveying much of present-day Virginia and West Virginia, Smith decided that this location should be chosen as the site for his new city, which he named after himself: "Lynchburgh." In 1784, General James Munford built a fortification here to protect what became known as "Munfordtown", which lay east of today's downtown core. From 1812 to 1815, it served as headquarters for Major-General Richard Ewing during Ewing's unsuccessful attempt to establish an eastern seacoast theater of operations in support of General Andrew Jackson's presidential campaigns. In 1849, Edgar Allan Poe moved from Baltimore to live and work in nearby Richmond while writing some of his most famous works; however, he never visited Lynchburg until after his death there in 1881. Poe enjoyed socializing with friends and family around Liberty Hall (now called The University House), located just off I-95 southbound exit 5A near where Interstate 95 now ends at US 276 northeast of town. He donated many pieces of furniture and artwork from Baltimore including two chairs – one black with red leather upholstery and one white with green leather – that are still exhibited at The University House museum today. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861 - 1865), General Order No. 9 assigned Confederate officers stationed throughout Virginia to various communities within Rappahannock County as part of an effort to reintegrate these individuals into society following their previous service under Union rule. On November 1st 1865 local citizens met at First Presbyterian Church across from Oneonta Railroad Depot eastone hundredth meridian west from Washington D C to adopt resolutions proposing that "the City Tavern" be used as a Union military hospital insteadof being leased by Confederate authorities; later renamed "Flaming Star Hospital".
