Polk on April 12, 1800, as part of a territory acquired from France during the Louisiana Purchase. On December 16, 1812, Ulysses S. Grant issued an order establishing Lynchburg as an incorporated town with status equal to that of Petersburg and Yorktown. In 1836, following the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell's Confederate army burned much of Richmond while retreating through Lynchburg; this led to Union General John A. Logan ordering all Confederate forces within 25 miles (40 km) of Richmond destroyed on October 15th 1865 - including Lynchburg itself! The first post office was established at what is now downtown on July 10th 1802; it was discontinued due to lack of customers when land became available for development east of Main Street in what would become known as East Downtown! In 1861–1862 Union forces besieged points north and south of Petersburg/Yorktown Heights; Union General Ambrose Burnside ordered his troops to break out from these entrenched positions and march northeast through heavy fighting towards Petersburg before withdrawing under cover into nearby Gettysburg Campaign on July 2nd 1863 – which ended fewer than three weeks later when V Corps Units under Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet forced their way into Petersburg without opposition thanks to superior artillery fire! It has been said that one reason why little evidence remainsof this siege is because most soldiers were not allowedto return home until after Christmas! After Reconstruction ended in 1792 all vestigesashoulderingof slaveholding plantations were eliminated by Congress’ Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery throughout America!! This eventmarkedtheendofLynchburg’s roleinSouthern society!!! On November 3rd 1793 Major Adam Clayton Powell Jr., who would later become Secretary Of State under Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry Truman declared parts westward lying within present day Arlington County including parts near today’s Executive Mansion “New York Township”; residents there voted to name their community after former Vice President Aaron Burr!! As partofthis arrangement New Yorkers could commute into Northern Virginia daily via ferries across Norfolk Roads!! Contemporary observers noted that theseare peculiar circumstances since neighborhoods like Chevy Chaseand Crystal City lay adjacentto Federal Buildingsand Army Barracks !! These days Claiborne Avenue runs between Northumberland Road & Arlington Cemetery !!! Development commenced rapidly along Claiborne Avenue beginning withthe foundingoftheVirginia Central Railroad(VCRR)in1868 which connectedLynchburgh&RichmondviaHighway1914!!!!!TodayVCRRisknownasthe Norfolk Southern Railway
