Lynchburg is a small town in Albemarle County, Virginia. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. It is named for General James Lynch, who fought during the American Revolution and became a general in the United States Army after his victory at Yorktown. The town lies on the Patrick Henry Parkway and is located about 25 miles east of Charlottesville. The first settler in what is now Lynchburg was John Lynch, who arrived in 1776 from England. In 1801, David Mahon purchased land near what is now downtown Lynchburg from Nicholas Montresor. In 1815, Samuel Nicholson built a log cabin on the site of present-day Lynchburg University. In 1821, David Dudley built a two-story brick house on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets for himself and his wife Julia Ann Dudley. The first store in town was opened by Jno Fenton within one year of its establishment. In 1825–26, James Aiken platted land near wherepresent-day Easley stands to create an agricultural township called Aikenstown with a boundary line running northeast to southwest along US 1/US 10 just south of present-day Charlottesville; this area lay within the newly formed Randolph County subdivision which included much of Albemarle County north of functions I‑5 and east of SR 527 (the modern day Downtown Charlottesville). In 1830–31, Arthur Ashe bought 640 acres northwest of present-day Lynchburg from Nicholas Montresor for $2 per acre ($40 total) with an option to purchase additional land at $4 per acre ($60 total). This acquisition made Ashe one of the largest landowners in southern Virginia at that time; it also marked the beginning of Ashe's ownership interest in most all southeastern Virginia lands including Elizabeth City (now Petersburg), Hampton Roads (now Norfolk), Radford Township (now Winchester), Princess Anne County (now Quantico), as well as portions of Appomattox Courtland and Buchanan Counties westward to Shenandoah Valley. On April 12th 1830 – four days after purchasing Ashe's land – James Waddell erected his gristmill on stream bed just southeast of today's downtown Lynchburg; this mill continued operating until circa 1840 when it burned down due to overuse by farmers trying to improve yields with new milling techniques then unknown to Waddell or anyone else at that time! It should be noted that although Waddell may have been responsible for starting milling activity within what would become Lynchburg proper - original documentation indicates he did so solely because he needed water power available nearby for his other mills - some attribute early Mill Creek settlement beginnings specifically theretofore unknown! whiskey distiller Daniel Boone actually visited Waddell's mill prior to founding Roanoke Station less than three miles away on July 8th 1784 while upon horseback from Keedy’s Ferry across Mill Creek!! Although later evidence suggests creek landing operations were not started until much later following earlier mentioned visit by Boone - circumstances surrounding dam raise suspicion Chincoteague Landing could have been Priorities preceeded!! reeds used extensively during early years discouraged mowing & burning due TO high winds exposure but are now burned regularly if windy conditions exist
