In 1923, voters approved a charter for the University of Lynchburg – one of only two such institutions in Virginia at that time – based on plans submitted by then- Mayor Harry Byrd Sr.. The university’s first classes were held in rented classrooms within city limits in 1924 before moving into new facilities on College Hill later that year. Today, ULM occupies over 133 acres (51 hectares) across four campuses with approximately 12,500 students enrolled in undergraduate programs; graduate school offerings range from certificates through doctoral degrees).
