In 1802 James Fenton purchased three thousand acres (12 km²) of upland near present day downtown from Robert Eaddy for $2,000 and started to build what would come to be called Fort Fenton. This fortified plantation house served as both a home and office for Fenton until 1814 when he sold it to John Browning who renamed it Fort Sumter after American General Robert Eaddy's Siege of Charleston which ended with Eaddy's death at sea en route to escape prosecution for treasonous activities against England during the Revolutionary War In 1815 David Wofford bought six hundred acres (25 km²) east of modern day downtown from Edmund Randolph for $5,000 and laid out what became known as Woffordtown on high ground overlooking Downtown Lynchburg today. By 1830 there were over 100 houses located within one mile (1 km) of where we now stand including many that still stand today including Mrs John Adams House which is now used as a museum adjacent to Confederate Soldiers Museum while also lying across Church Street from where Presbyterian Meetinghouse once stood Today 300 buildings remain within one mile (1 km) of Downtown while 2 miles (3 km) north lies Ft Sumter National Monument celebrating America's historic event that took place here fifty years ago
