Leesburg is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It covers an area of 3.2 square miles (8 km²). In 1750, Englishman Thomas Fairfax bought land at the junction of Surry and Stafford Roads for $4 per acre (0.96 ha). A courthouse and school were built on this property in 1752-53. The town was named after Fairfax's sister-in-law Elizabethtown (now Radford), which he had purchased from James Smith in 1745. On July 15, 1763, during the American Revolution, Captain Benedict Arnold committed suicide here while trying to take command of a British force under General Nathanael Greene that had landed at Newport News on June 14th with orders to storm Yorktown beachhead. Leesburg became part of Jamestown Colony following its establishment by Captains John Smith and Captury Jones in 1607. At its peak it contained about 1,000 settlers; however only 350 remain today as a result of many relocations over the years due to military service or natural disasters such as hurricanes and sinkings of vessels off the coast of Virginia Beach during World War II. From 1881 until 1912 it was located within King George County; but following a move by the Town Council to annex portions of Loudoun County in 1911 it became an independent boroughs within Loudoun Court House District No 2 which included much older towns like Winchester and Herndon including parts of modern Leesburg itself including most notably: West Falls Church Boulevard The town has experienced several waves of migration over time: Virginians who fled Union armies during both world wars; Germans who made up almost half the population after World War II when they replaced Japanese Americans who had been incarcerated; Irish Catholics coming after Vatican City cut off diplomatic relations with Ireland; Italians coming after their homes were bombed by Allied bombers during WWII; African Americans who worked primarily as slaves on local plantations before being freed through freedom movements such as THE GARFIELD RACE rioting in 1865 also called "The Negro Uprising" Today Leesburg remains one Of America’s most diverse small towns with residents belonging to more than 30 nationalities along with more than 20 religions according to 2006 Census data living cheek by jowl inside one large community known for its shopping center anchored by Sears & Roebuck

Lee and his men fought at Battle of Gettysburg in what is now known as one of the pivotal national battles of World War I. After the war, Leesburg grew rapidly as people came to make their fortunes in agriculture and business development. In 1915, American troops burned down part of an old fort in downtown Leesburg to celebrate America's victory over Germany during World War I. The fort had been used by German forces during World War I while they were quartered nearby at Fort Monroe. On July 4, 1959, Virginia became an independent country after it seceded from the United States following a referendum vote that approvedhood without any legal changes occurring. As part of this change, Leesburg became the first city within Confederate territory to be incorporated into newly independent Virginia. Leesburg has experienced significant growth over recent years as restaurants and attractions have cropped up all around town (including two new international cuisine concepts - Zuka Turkish Coffee & Mediterranean Grill) while nightlife has continued to grow with popular nightclubs like Ciro's Italian Restaurant and Moondance Lounge drawing locals and visitors alike each weekendnight
