Leesburg was founded by Colonel John Lewis in 1775 as a smallonga settlement on the Rappahannock River. In 18th century America it was one of many frontier towns that built up around strategic forts and military posts such as Fort Monroe and Petersburg. The British burned down Leesburg's fort in 1781 during their retreat from Yorktown after successful attacks on Yorktown Heights and Fortress Monroe. In 1814, General James Ewell established Fort Pickens here to control access to the James River through present-day Suffolk County. After Ewell's death in 1836, his son George Washington Key took over command of the fort and renamed it Fort Pulaski after Pulaski County in Tennessee which had served as his headquarters during the American Revolution. The first white person to live in Leesburg was Captain John Lewis who arrived there with his family in 1775 from England under treaty terms negotiated with King George II of Great Britain following America's undeclared war against Great Britain known as the Indian Wars. Colonel Lewis developed a smallonga settlement on Rappahannock River where he built a log cabin and began trading goods with local Native Americans for goods they produced including baskets, knives, tobacco pipes and other items valuable enough to be worth traveling long distances for purchase. He also began growing rice crops that were picked by hand from rice fields near present day Loudoun County while supplies lasted back then because transportation costs were prohibitively expensive for such an isolated community at that time especially when compared to more developed areas surrounding Leesburg like Alexandria or Roanoke Island where people could get merchants licenses or build roads connecting these regions together like we have today within minutes or less using technology today! In 18th century America small villages formed around strategic military outposts providing essential services like post offices (the first being West Point on Harrisonburg Peninsula) barracks (Fort Monroe), stores/commerce (Petersburgh) and defense against Indians/Natives seeking refuge among us rather than submit to British rule which meant food shortages, disease etc…. A few weeks after arriving in present-day Leesburg I met some old friends from my youth who still reside hereabouts: Captains Lewis' two sons Jonathan & Thomas – all three now elderly men – Captain Elijah Howe – later Lieutenant Governor of Virginia – Dr.(later Mrs.) Martha Washington Key - wife of General James Ewell - mother-in-law of George Washington Key - all living close by stillFBing each other whenever possible! In 1776 Col John Lewis set up shop hereabouts near current day LoudounCountyLine just upstream from what is now called Battery Park Driveway eastbound approaching Petersburg Ferry Landing across Elizabethport Creek about four miles northward along Potomac River From this site he started trading Antique European firearms made mostly guns brought overland by teams of traders directly into North Carolina & Georgia before being exported via sea– wrists bound behind back so no weapons could fall out onto open road public display making them very rare but this trade did not last long since soon afterwards British troops captured Waco Sultana trader convoy transporting rich treasures home loaded aboard HMS Repulse off Cape Fear region North Carolina giving rise to famous pirate treasure hunt mentioned often throughout history
The town of Leesburg was founded in 1749 by John Lewis and his wife Elizabeth. The town's first school was built in 1757. In 1812, the town became an authorized post office and received its own government. In 1819, the Leesburg Canal was opened and helped to bring traffic into the town. The canal allowed for easy access to water resources, which made the town more prosperous. In 1865, Leesburg became a state capital and was renamed Virginia's capital city after General Robert E. Lee.
