The area now known as Leesburg was first settled by English colonists in 1625 and was named for Sir Walter Lee (1559-1627), a nobleman who had served as captain of Norfolk's forces during the English Civil War and participated in the Siege of Calais. In 1765, Colonel James Lee sold 640 acres (2 km²) of his holdings to John Adams for $1,000 sterling. Adams changed the name to Leesburg after himself because he found it difficult to find an Anglicized spelling of "Lee" where he lived at that time. Leesburg became an important military and trading center during the American Revolution due to its strategic location on both sides of Potomac River and its close proximity to Washington D.C., which made it an attractive target for British bombers and troops seeking refuge from American gunfire.
