Leesburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Loudoun–Fauquier Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Virginians John Lewis and James Lees in 1757 as "Leesburg". In 1802, it was moved to its current location on the Rappahannock River east of Manassas Junction. The first courthouse in Leesburg was built in 1808. The Mannings-Cook House Museum opened in 1984 and is stuffed with artifacts from the early days of Leesburg. In 1865, General Robert Ewell established Camp Lee near present-day Manassas Junction to support Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Union forces captured Petersburg in April 1865, Camp Lee became an arsenal and military storage depot for Confederate forces until it was finally abandoned in September 1865. In 1907, Leesburghs first post office opened under the name of "New Market." The post office closed on October 1, 1907, due to high postal rates being paid by other towns within Prince William County at that time. The last mail carrier service arrived here on November 15th 1912 after many years of experiments by Postmaster General Alfred Himmelfarb with no success whatsoever; however this event marked one end of what is now known as First Class Mail service through Prince William County which began on December 5th 1947 when WasonvillePost Office became operational After over 50 years without a USPS facility here (due to high postal rates), First Class Mail service arrived from Winchester on July 1st 2016 with a new building next door to our old building which has been remodeled into offices including a large kitchenette for teamsters serving customers inside!
