Early immigrants to Virginia were drawn to the fertile soil and natural resources of the area and began growing wheat, tobacco, and other crops. The early settlers built their homes around wells and ponds, which allowed them access to light and other necessary amenities. One of these pioneer families was the Deane family, who started a small store in 1792. Over time, additional businesses cropped up in Leesburg. In 1827, John S. Deane opened a mercantile business at Fourth Street and Main Avenue. This establishment became known as the "Old Store." Over time, Deane's store gained a reputation for being one of the best in town for selling optical equipment and supplies. In 1838, John Hargrave took over Deane's store. Hargrave was an accomplished businessman with many years of experience in this industry. He developed a large inventory of optical goods including telescopes, microscopes, binoculars, eyeglasses, sun glasses, etc., which he sold through his own personal shop or elsewhere throughout town. In 1850-1851 (or possibly earlier), George Waguespack opened a grocery store on Market Street near Third Avenue that became known as "The Grocery House". Waguespack was an experienced grocer who had worked in numerous British towns before coming to America to start his own business ventures hereabouts. His grocerystore had considerable success until it closed in 1865 due to fire damage by lightning! By 1860 or 1861 (or even earlier), John Atherton had established himself as one of Leesburg's leading merchants with hisestablished dry goods store at Seventh Street and Northampton Avenue. Atherton operated this business until 1896 when he moved it across Third Ave into what is now called Fountain Place Shopping Center! His store was one of Leesburg's most successful during its era; it continuedOperating until 1973! Atherton also served as Mayor from 1882-1889 under then Governor William Henry Harrison Greenfield II! It is interesting that one such influential local figure acted as both mayor AND governor simultaneously – something that not many Virginians did at that time! After Atherton retired from his business operations circa 1896-1912 (during which period he also served on several city councils/boards), he moved away fromLeesburg altogether but left some legacy behind: In 1912 he donated land adjacent to Main & Fairfax Streets for use as parkland; today that area includes much more than just Parklands Cemetery though! Furthermorehe founded what is now called Appalachian State University – still oneof Virginia's top private universities today –Leesburg’s first postsecondary institution!

Today, many people continue to identify with this aspect of their lives as well - many are proud to call themselves " principle owners" or landowners here in Leesburg- one reason why so much has changed since then! As we enter into another century here on our small corner of Virginia, we can remember all too well how settler families first arrived here from Maryland and other related colonies during what is known as The American Revolution (1775-83). They encountered harsh weather conditions which led some men – including Colonel John Lewis –to fight for independence against British tyranny even though he received only $5 for each day he served on an expedition into Canada that failed catastrophically at Yorktown (a place now known as Harrisonburg). This cost him his life but also gave rise to one man’s defining moment: Colonel John Lewis helped lead a large force across the Potomac River into enemy territory where they overthrew General Cornwallis' forces after three days battle on September 11th 1781 - becoming America's first independent troops (the event is also celebrated annually at Patriot Day Parade!). Herein lies one more key facet about our community: While we may often be associated with history through events such as these – likeColonel John Lewis himself – much happens everyday that makes us feel alive today!
