The town has many historical sites including: Stone Quarry which still produces cannonballs today; Arlington Cemetery where Ulysses S Grant is interred; Fort Monroe which once served as a Confederate fortress; and Lee's Headquarters Building located onLee Street near Fort Totten National Monument. Leesburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and his troops during the American Revolutionary War. It was named for General James Lees, who fought with Washington in that war. In 1820, Leesburg became a Circuit Court seat for Prince William County. The population had grown to 12,500 by 1840, but declined rapidly due to smallpox epidemics and other causes. By 1860, only 4 people lived in Leesburg proper; the rest were scattered throughout rural areas around it. In 1865-1866, Leesburg suffered a devastating fire that destroyed most of the downtown block and killed many of its inhabitants; this event is still known as "The Great Fire." In 1873-1874, John Marshall ran for Governor of Virginia on a platform opposing statehood for Virginians outside of Loudoun County; he lost narrowly to Thomas Fenton (the incumbent). Although Marshall's defeat did nothing to change Virginian attitudes toward statehood or towards federalism generally (Fenton would later become one of America's leading advocates for secession from the Union), it set off a long campaign by some in Leesburg against any efforts at statehood within the county boundaries – notably those led by Mayor Joseph Hargrave – which ultimately failed in 1895 when voters overwhelmingly rejected proposed amendments to the Constitution granting such status to Virginia without representation in Congress. Leesburg experienced significant growth after World War II as thousands of veterans returning home found work in what had been an agricultural society before the war. The postwar boom led to increased traffic and development around town Center Drive; however, much of this has since been replaced by housing developments adjacent to Interstate 95 and Interstate 66 exits east of town center on two parallel streets called "Highway 50/I-95 Boulevard". Leesburg also played host during various times to major league baseball games including Game 3 of the 1934 World Series between Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees; Game 5 of that series between Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers; both games were played at Forbes Field on Veterans' Day weekend in 1936; Game 7 that year between St Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds at Crosstown Stadium on October 11th); as well as Games 2 & 3of their respective 1985 NLDS matchups against Boston Red Sox (at Fenway Park)
