Leesburg is located in Virginia and is a census-designated place (CDP) within Prince William County. The population of Leesburg was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The CDP also contains three schools: Central High School, which serves students in grades 9-12; James A. Robb Jr., Sr./Jr.'s United Methodist Church; and two public high schools: West Side High School and Eastern Hills High School. The first settler in what is now Leesburg was Capt John Floyd who arrived on July 4, 1775 from Portsmouth, England via the Mayflower ship "Nova Scotia" with his family and nine other passengers. He named the site Floyd's Head because he thought it would be an excellent spot for trading goods with Indians. In 1776 Capt Folsom built a cabin on the headland which became known as Folsom's Landing or Fort Folsom. In 1785 Lt Col George Washington visited the area and recommended that settlers move to what is now Leesburg because of its good harbor entrance/exit and easy access to water supplies including Potomac River." In 1802 Robert Ewing established Ewing Land Company to purchase land in present day Prince William County from Sir Thomas Fairfax III.* After Anthony Armstrong landed at Yorktown on October 23rd1781 with his army seeking refuge following their defeat at Saratoga Campaign – Armistice Day – most Virginians followed Armstrong into exile rather than fight another war.* On February 14th1804 Giles Wofford patented 12 acres (49 m²) adjacent to present day church property grantee Rev John Lewis’ father-in-law† Almon Lewis being instrumental in obtaining this patent** The first house on the site was built by Wofford about 1800 as part of his farmstead called "Wofford's Place".
