The town of Leesburg, Virginia was founded in 1786 by Captain John Lewis and his family. The Lewis family owned and operated a ferry service from the town to the Peninsula. In 1814, the U.S. government purchased the Ferry Service from Captain Lewis’s descendants and continued to operate it until 1954. Leesburg is located in Prince William County, Virginia on the Potomac River about 25 miles south of Washington D.C. The population of Leesburg was 27,558 at the 2000 census. It is part of Loudoun County, Va., which has a total area of 362 square miles (1,020 km²). The county seat is Fairfax County. Leesburg was established as a small trading post on George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in 1786 by Captain John Lewis and his family after they bought land from Governor Ratcliffe for $500. By 1800-1801, Leesburg had become an important stop on the road between Williamsburg and Alexandria due to its convenient location on top of hill overlooking both townships and its river portage connection with the James River crossing point at Point Comfort along route 1A (now Route 7). In 1814, when war erupted between Great Britain and France over control of North America, General Robert Ewell decided to move his army camp near present-day Fairfax because he believed that any British forces marching through Fairfax would be stopped at Leesburg instead of reaching northern Virginia where they could fight against Tecumseh’s United States militia forces operating under General Andrew Jackson who had taken up arms against Great Britain in 1812-13; this possibility led to Ewell’s decision not to cross Central Stream Valley into Northern Virginia where he might have encountered Jackson’s forces unopposed since there were no Canadian troops stationed in that region during those years leading up to European War I; instead he moved his army camp about 25 miles southward across Potomac River into Prince William County (then known as Upper Arlington) – then part of Virginia) where he expected company commanders throughout Northern Virginia would join him if war did break out between Great Britain and France because transportation links connecting these regions were then quite good given that most people lived within two or three hours' ride of one another outside Lexington or Richmond! It should be noted here that before World War I horses were used extensively for military transport across open country rather than being packed into wagons like now so horseback travel became more common especially during times when roads were not maintained well enough for carts or buses which are now much more common even though back then carts/bus trips took days instead weeks sometimes months just like today's drive from my house to your house!) Because Leesburgh Landing became such an important stop for travelers coming downriver following early wagon roads built eastward along side banks opposite either Capitol Hill or Legislative Hall – all Interstate 95 exits lead directly there including exit number 5A off US 20 today – it also served as a stopping place for stagecoaches making their way northward following routes 1A & 1B becoming increasingly difficult since steamboats began carrying passengers across lower Potomac from Georgetown upriver around 1865! In fact some consider it one day journey [between points] from Alexandria via Rockville & Falls Church (& Eastern Shore) – but only 15 minutes (& very slow!) by Stage Coach Company vehicle going eaither direction! Leesburgh Landing remained an active seaport until approximately 1850 when large ships began docked there using Norfolk waterfront facilities accessible only by cable car/ferry while larger boats still anchored offshore occasionally using wharfage facility ashore! After 1850 many small businesses closed down due mainly to lack of customers during difficult economic times many developers purchased land adjacent rivermouth& redeveloped various waterfront properties providing homesites overlooking river beginning around 1870 although original property values have varied greatly over time principally reflecting changing needs & preferences among various generations living within close proximity whether inside or outside city limits!! Today remnants remaining from pioneer era include old ferry landing buildings originally constructed with logs washed ashore nearby although few remain standing today; old mill complex currently uses as hotel however mills predate Revolutionary War era & Allen Paper Mill building actually stands next door dating back to 1768 accordinge To local legend “The first paper factory in America was erected here by order King George II commissions Nicholas Myddleton Augustus Allen founder father son after visiting Philadelphia several times looking for new methods o producing quality paper products….Allen Paper Mill manufactured high quality paper products until 1830″ leaving what is now Pioneer Place behind primarily composed mostlyof modern housing developments considered almost exclusively suburban!! prior thereto numerous smaller frame houses stood scatteredabout boundedby wide intervening streets generally lined with low masonry fences typical farmlands surrounding earlier rural dwellings!!! Although less developed than nearby jurisdictions primarily attributableto later changes brought about by gasoline powered cars etc.;Leesburg remains one OF AMERICA'S BACKYARD PIECES ostensibly accountingfor nearly half OF ALL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR RENT IN CITY OF LEESBURG VIRGINIA despite having fewer residents living therein comparedTo virtually every other incorporated municipality herein thus proving once again how LOCAL AUTHORITIES IMPLEMENT REAL BUSINESS IMPROVEMENTSrather than allowing ANY BIG BUSINESS TO DISMANTLE AND REPLACE EVERYONE WITH THEIR OWN COMPETITION thereby destroyingcommunity spirit& community involvement!!!!
In 1702, George Washington and his younger brother John were born in the town of Leesburg, Virginia. The young Washington was educated at a local school before moving to Alexandria, Virginia in 1709 to become an ensign in the British Marine Corps. He rose through the ranks and became a captain in 1732. Washington's participation in the American Revolution led him to be named Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on July 4,1776. In that role, he played a leading role in defeating Britain at Saratoga and Yorktown. He is also considered one of America's most accomplished military commanders.
