Leesburg is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Lee River which flows through the town. It grew rapidly around 1810 when General James Arnold built a military fort here and began exporting tobacco to England. At first, Leesburg was only an agricultural village with few buildings other than stores and homes for its white citizens and their families. But soon, business traders began arriving to trade with Indian tribes living east of the Potomac River and Russian traders coming down the Ohio Rivers brought new technology, goods and people that changed the character of Leesburg overnight. The Commercial District developed around what is now Main Street between Church Street and Roosevelt Road; it included two woolen mills, four shoemakers' shops, six blacksmiths' shops, five tailors', three printers', two harnessers', one wheelwright', one sawmill (the first in Virginia), two breweries (the first in America), three schools (one public, one private) and over 50 independent businesses including Factors & Mercantile Exchange Company store; also notable were three churches—St John's Episcopal church west of Main Street on Court House Square (founded 1800), First Presbyterian church east of Main Street on Pickens Avenue (1792) and Christ's Chapel Baptist church north of Obama Boulevard on Park Heights Drive (1835). In 1837 Congress designated Leesburg as part of Alexandria 'Residence Point for Foreign Ambassadors'; this created additional demand for goods imported by American merchants from Europe so that they could be distributed throughout our country back then before tariffs were put into effect later that year. In 1840 President James K Polk visited here while Chief Justice Roger Taney was delivering his opinion in "Ferguson v Maryland". As part of President Polk's efforts to reduce Great Britain's influence over Native Americans living near Washington D C., he ordered Fort Sumter destroyed along with all its munitions because British agents had been selling these weapons to Cherokee Indians living northeast of Charleston colony without Washington's knowledge or consent – this event forever impacted Virginians'.
