Leesburg is a census-designated place in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Alexandria metropolitan area. The town started as a small frontier community in 1784 on the Rappahannock River near modern Leesburg. The first white male settler was Capt. John Forbes and his family who arrived from Scotland in 1785. In 1786, James Huffman moved from Frederick County to what is now Leesburg and began developing land that he called "Huffmans Corner." In 1794, David Stockbridge settled in what is now Leesburg and developed land including parts of present day Fairfax County. In 1802, General John Pope occupied Alexandria for three months during the American Revolution while its citizens prepared for battle against British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gage. When Pope withdrew his army, most of Alexandria's residents returned to their homes except for a few hundred men who stayed behind to guard against possible attack by the British troops moving back into the city after their victory over Admiral George Washington's forces at Yorktown two years earlier. A number of these soldiers were then drafted into General James Ketchum's brigade which fought at Chantilly on September 11th, 1814 under Lt Genl Robert Ewell; some are still buried there today within 10 feet (3 m) of where they died during one of America's bloodiest moments ever recorded Gouverneur Morris also inspected Fort Monroe before returning home to Manhattan on October 12th1805 On November 7th1815 about 100 acres (40 ha) west of present day Leesburg became known as Arlington Heights when Ulysses S Grant purchased it from Nicholas Nicholson for $1 million dollars . The grant allowed him to build Arlington House – one of history’s largest country houses – which eventually served as his presidential residence from 1865 until 1901 . On February 14th 1861 Confederate Major General Pte Benjamin Butler took control over Fairfax Court House after routing Unionists under Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside throughout Northern Virginia; Butler had been ordered by Confederate President Jefferson Davis not to pursue any more Unionists following the Battle of Fredericksburg two weeks earlier On April 6th 1861 Captain Abraham Lincoln assigned Brigadier General Winfield Scott with orders march through Fairfax Court House towards Manassas Junction without encountering either side; this order caused much confusion because no one knew whether or not Butler or Scott actually controlled Fairfax Court House On May 9th 1861 Captain Alfred Pleasonton relieved Arnold Davidson as Commanding Officerof District OF Richmond; Pleasonton arrived in response to reports that Butler was inside Fairfax Court House having just finished assaulting Mechanicsville At 4 PM on May 9 th , 1861 Confederate MajorGeneral Pte Benjamin Butler surrendered control over Fairfax Court House effective immediately Thereafter: all military operations stopped inside or adjacent thereto… Commander Phillip Seymour Johnston became commanding officer… Aftermath: Between 1861 and 1865 almost 400 people were killed & 1,500 wounded inside or adjacenttoFort Worth courthouse complex
