Leesburg is a town in Frederick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1811 by George Washington and his family and named for General James Lees. The first store in Leesburg was built on Main Street by Wm. Hickey in 1827. In 1830, John Marshall established the first school in Leesburg. After the death of George Washington in 1799, his widow Martha set up a trust to purchase lands around Fairfax Station and name it "Leesburg". She also hired Nicholas Hackman as her surveyor to plat out what would become Leesburg onto this land. On July 12th, 1800-1 year after Washington's death- Martha finalized these platting deeds when she arrived at West Point on horseback with her brother-in-law Colonel John Marshall along with Lt.-Governor James Fauquier (the future 1st U.S. Secretary of War). In 1812, General James Lees bought property east of present day Route 242 from Nicholas Hackman for $2 per acre (about ). He used this land to build his plantation called "Belle Isle" which he named for his wife Belle Isle Furnace where coal was mined until 1954 when it closed down due to pollution allegations from nearby Power Plant #1( now known as West Point Nuclear Plant). After General James' death circa 1818 some members of his extended family sold off their holdings including Belle Isle Estate which became part of what is now known as Arlington County before becoming a borough within Portsmouth County after that county gained its independence from Virginia on May 12th 1901 just before Leesburghs incorporation date! After years of development work started on building schools and other infrastructure there were 4 townships located within present day Frederick Countys limits: Easton Township (founded 1861), Germantown Township (founded 1865), Northumberland Township (founded 1870), and South Cumberland Township (founded 1875). However during World War II when all but Germantown Township were destroyed numerous homes were demolished or requisitioned by the government for use as military barracks primarily those located near power plants such as West Point Nuclear Plant making way for today's farmland! As more people moved into leestown throughout the 1960s & 1970s many businesses opened up like King's Pharmacy which still operates today across from US Customs House; Hickory Hardware starting up back then next door to what is now Burger Kings; Stroud Paper Mill started up right after high school; L&B Chevrolet began serving lunch outside local high school; etcetera etcetera until eventually all but one business closed down leaving only one grocery store operating left open today - Belk!
