Leesburg is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the City of Manassas. The town has been inhabited since the late 17th century and first appears on Colonial maps from 1634. In 1750 it was renamed for George Washington. The present day Leesburg was formed in 1871 when parts of Manassas and Winchester merged to form one municipality. Leesburg has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as an Indian village named Kanawhaaheenkonkonk on the lower Rappahannock River. In 1634, George Washington's forces under Generals Thomas Farrall and John Nicholson attacked the indigenous tribe known as Kanawhaaheenkonk near present-day Leesburg. Washington's troops destroyed their villages and took many items including war dolls, beads, baskets, arrows and children into captivity. In 1750 LEEsBurg was renamed for George Washington due to his actions against the Native Americans during that time period; however locals continued to call it Kanawhaaheenkonk until about 1800 when the community became fully whiteized by European settlers who arrived in large numbers after British colonies began opening up in North America during the early 1600s. The first permanent settler in what would become Leesburg arrived around 1770 when Colonel James Yeates built a log cabin on land that he had purchased from Indians near modern-day Arlington Cemetery northwest of town limits (now east of I-495). This development marked an important turning point for LEEsBURG as it became one of several early American settlements located along major roadways leading northward from Virginia's capital city of Williamsburg – similar settlements included Fredericktown (1772), Charles Town (1775), Nelsonville (1777), Lynchburg (1779) and New Kent Court House which opened its doors in December 1781 just south of where today’s Route 7 intersects I-495 approximately three miles northeast of Leesburg centerline – this location allowed easy access by wagonloads of colonists arriving from distant British colonies for purchase or trade goods with local Virginians such as potters, farmers, merchants and planters living off virginian soil before construction ever began on what would eventually become Alexandria Naval Air Station – now known as Joint Base Andrews AFB - within sight but not reachable by car! During this time period there were also some important military engagements fought nearby such as Markham’s Ferry operations against Cherokee insurgents led by Chief John RossOctober 12th 1778 resulting in two killed & six wounded; Battle Of Epperville November 3rd1800 Rocky Mount September 26th1812 skirmish between Patriot Militia Company “Thirteen Colonies” & Creek Nation led by Chief Joseph Johnston October 9th 1814 resulted in two Creeks Killed & four Wounded; Second Battle Of Yorktown Aboard USS ConstitutionMay 8TH1865 resulted in three prisoners captured alive including Ulysses S Grant later placed aboard CSS Sumter
