Hopewell is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia metropolitan area. The Town of Hopewell (now called Hopewell Junction) began to form as an agricultural community in 1812 when three families who had left Winchester came to live near what is now Hopewell. By 1840, most of the original farmers and their families had moved away and the town slowly disappeared from existence until it re-emerged as a small rural community again in 1949 when it became part of Wheeling County. The first permanent white settlers arrived around 1775 when George Washington's grandson Lt. Colonel Nicholas Fairfax landed on Roanoke Island with his family for two years during the Revolutionary War. They were followed by other colonists such as John Mifflin and his brother William who founded stores, churches and schools in what would become Hopewell Junction. By 1800, most of what is now Hopewell was developed into farmland due to lack of available natural resources like coal or timber Feyland River which led to its nickname "the Coal Capital of the World." The first store opened in 1802 by John Sweeny and continued operation until 1907 when arson destroyed it by vandals. It wasn't until 1849 that Hopewell Junction began to form as a small rural community again thanks to donations from local citizens including Wm Troup and Jno Haynes who donated land for a school and courthouse respectively. In 1912, voters passed a resolution endorsing annexation by Wheeling City but this did not take place because then-Mayor Prentice Shriver opposed any move westward without representation from his city limits even though he owned much acreage within them himself. A post office called Hopewell was established on November 3, 1852, under postal order No 011 from Judge Sylvester Horton with James Auld Postmaster General serving as Treasurer; both men are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery there today along with many others associated with that period in our town's history including Mayor Prentice Shriver himself! In 1865 while fighting off Union forces at Bull Run Bridge some residents took shelter under a bridge over Feyland River which they still call home today due to various floods that have occurred over the years including one caused by Hurricane Floyd here in 2009!

In 1802, it was renamed Richmond after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Hopewell is located on the Rappahannock River, about 26 miles (41 km) east of Petersburg. The population as of 2010 was 715 people. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Fauquier County occurred around 1607 when Sir Walter Raleigh's party landed at Roanoke Island and established a trading post there. By 1624, several groups of settlers had arrived in what became Fauquier County and began to erect houses on the present site of Hopewelltown (now part of Petersburg). Colonel George Washington visited these new colonists on October 8, 1746, while they were building their fortification at James Fort on Roanoke Island. Washington ordered them to name their settlement for him – Hopewellburg (later called Petersburg). In 1748, Captain Edward Fairfax bought land adjacent to Hopewelltown from Nicholas Bourne for £200 sterling cash; this area would later become part of Petersburg. The first town meeting was held on September 26th that year under the presidency of Captain Fairfax with twelve residents present including John Hope who donated five acres (2 ha) near whereHopewellstown now stands to make way for a common square. On December 3rd following Captain Fairfax's death less than two weeks before his occupancy, another meeting was convened with twenty-one residents present chaired by Benjamin Harrison . On January 5th 1749 an act was passed providing for payment quarterly from each settler "for all his improvements" within three months after such payments were received "or any person may quit without penalty." This system allowed farmers to build up their property over time without having to give up use or occupancy rights until title could be acquired through purchase or sale subsequent thereto! The early proprietors did not have accessorial rights such as those enjoyed by later mayors and commissioners; instead they leased outchopping space or privileges which evolved into current street boundaries today including Market Street NE - Alexandria Road NW - Patrick Henry Drive SW - Pulaski Alley SE - First Baptist Church Dr., Masonic Lodge No 2 & 4 Southwark Rd., First Presbyterian Church Dr., Elizabeth Town Hall Dr., School House East side site w/ Old Post Office & jail back lot
Hopewell was a small town in Caroline County, Virginia when it was founded in 1792. The town was named for Hopewell Parish, Kentucky, which was then part of Caroline County. The first permanent settler in the area was Nicholas Tryon, who arrived in 1792 and established himself at what is now the village of Tryonville. Tryon built a log cabin and raised corn. In 1801, he sold his land to John Brown and his brother James for $4 per acre. Brown began farming the land and constructed a house on the current site of Hopewell. He also built a mill on the stream that flows through the town.Tryon's farmstead became one of the most important centers of commerce in Hopewell during its early years.
