Hopewell is a town in Caroline County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg–Newport News, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Hopewell was Captain John Smith in 1607. There were three settlements in this area: Hopewell Hundred (now Hopewell), Westover and Little Creek Settlement. At the time of its founding, Hopewell Hundred included present-day Caroline County but was divided into two parts shortly before its merger with Fairfax County to create Virginia in 1776. The first white person to live here was James Robertson on April 10, 1775. He and his family were among the earliest settlers of what became known as "the Old Colony." In 1855, when Caroline County became part of Virginia Statehood, Hopewell had a population of only 557 people; by 1870 it had reached 1,272 people and by 1900 it had grown to 2,496 people. Asiana Hall School opened here on October 8th 1904 which eventually became one of the first schools in Petersburg-Newport News MSA after being organized on February 14th 1925 by Mrs Anna Bryant Pemberton and Dr JF Whitehurst from Deep Run Elementary School & Middle School #2 located just east of Main Street across from the old A&P grocery store
