A cotton gin was built around 1810 and became an important source of income for the village. In 1831, when Buchanan County was created from parts of Caroline County, Hopewell became its capital. The village continued to grow until it reached its current size of 1,546 residents in 1950. during that time period, hopewell also erected several notable landmarks including: First Baptist Church (1947), State Capitol Building (1959), and United Methodist Church (1990). Hopewell has experienced many changes over the years; some of which have been positive such as growth in business and tourism; while others have been more negative such as loss of jobs or homes due to development projects nearby.
