This has led to more businesses opening up within the town limits and an increased number of residents who are interested in buying or using these types of products. Hopewell is a small town in Pulaski County, Virginia. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Hopewell Chapel, which was located in the town. The first settlers were led by Captain John Smith and his family from Portsmouth, England in 1734-35 and arrived in what is now Hopewell on October 3, 1735. They built a log cabin and christened it "Hope" after their hope that God would guide them to success. A post office called Hopewell was established in 1801, and remained in operation until 1931. The first store opened at the corner of Elm Street and Church Road. A sawmill was built here in 1870-71; it ceased operations around 1935 because of competition from local mills. In 1903 a Methodist church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist became operational; it remains active today as First United Methodist Church (FUMC). In 1978, Hopewell Elementary School closed due to budget cuts within Pulaski County government; however, it reopened two years later as an all-day K-12 school with enrollment growth thanks to private donations from residents and businesses within the community. In 1990–1991, Hopewell Middle School also closed due to budgetary cuts within Pulaski County government but reopened as an all day K-12 school with enrollment growth thanks to private donations from residents and businesses within the community once again. Today both schools are operated by Fairfax County Schools through partnership agreements with FUMC/Hopewell Elementary School & Middle School respectively

However, some legacy of hopEWELL remain today – such as a large number of historic buildings that are still used today as businesses or homes.
