There are three Hopewell Parish locations in Virginia: Hopewell, Fairfax and Loudoun. The village of Hopewell was founded in 1724 by Colonel John Elliott and his wife Susannah Elliott. It is located on the Rappahannock River, about 12 miles west of Alexandria. English colonists first settled at Hopewell after they arrived in 1607. In 1724, Colonel John Elliott purchased a tract of land from the Potomac Indians and erected a log cabin there. He named the settlement "Hopewell" for his daughter, Hannah Elliott-Stewart. The town of Fairfax was established about 1749 by Reverend Jameson Oglethorpe and Drury Lane Tavern owner George Washington as a military post to protect the settlers along the Potomac River from Native Americans. Drury Lane Tavern continued to be an important center for trade until it burned down in 1837. From its location on Fairfax Street near MP3 Park, Fairfax became one of the largest villages in Virginia because it had access to many goods available only within a few miles of town. The town also developed its own grid system for surveying land and building roads. By 1800, Fairfax had over 100 homes and businesses including churches, hospitals, schools and mills]. Loudoun was established in 1812 by Lieutenant governor Robert Ewing as part of what became known as East Loudoun Circuit (later West Loudoun Circuit). On July 7, 1812, Lt Governor Ewing ordered General James Armistead to march eastward from Cumberland Point on horseback across Prince Edward Island towards Danville where he intended to establish a new capital city called Armisteadtown under British rule.] After marching through Lynchburg Junction on September 14th they reached Danville October 3rd where they were met with resistance from local militia led by Captain Samuel Tucker who opposed their efforts to take control of the capital city.] Following failed negotiations with Captain Tucker and Commodore Arthur Jones (the commander at Danville) Lt Governor Ewing withdrew his troops back up the river] In 1814 Lt Governor Ewing appointed Major General Thomas Blunt as acting lieutenant governor] In 1815 Blunt issued an order withdrawing all soldiers between Cumberland Point and Richmond due to lack of supplies] When violence broke out between Indian tribes living along the southern borderlands adjacent to Marylandand Virginia following frontier conflict known as Pontiac’s Rebellion], Captains William Clarke & Nathaniel Bacon ascended rivers Stroudsburg Pike & Blue Ridge Road into Maryland leading citizens northwards towards Baltimore without orders]] In November 1800 General Anthony Wayne marched southward from Fredericktown via Mechanicsville intending eventually reaching Richmond] By December 1800 General Wayne had advanced about 20 miles southward before encountering significant Native American resistance at Battle Cry Hill][After losing this engagement General Wayne retreated back upriver]} Confederate forces numbering 25 thousand attacked Federal forces numbering 10 thousand near White Sulphur Springs December 26th][After repulsing these assaults Confederate commanders decided not pursue further into Maryland]} Militia leader Captain Samuel Tucker surrendered unconditionally after leading approximately 3000 men against Federal forces[/ Although successful militarily Tucker lost control over key aspects of local government which contributed significantly to subsequent federal victory] The village site is currently occupied by United Methodist Church which built there during World War II
