Hopewell is a small town located in Prince Edward County, Virginia. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg-Manassas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Hopewell were Dutch traders in 1607 and 1608. A grant of land was made to John Mercer in 1611. The town was named for Hopeton, Hampshire, England, where Mercer had been born. In 1796 Rev. George Washington spoke on behalf of the settlers at a assembly meeting in Hopewell and recommended that they name their new community after General James Stanhope (1728-1802), who had fought withWashington during the American Revolution. The task force that erected the White House in 1799 provided furnishings for the building and agreed to erect a nearby church if it became necessary to serve both communities simultaneously. In 1819, Hopewell celebrated its first anniversary as an independent village by having a picnic on the Monongahela River adjacent to present-day Hopkinsville. The gathering included music and dancing by local residents, Methodist ministers from Williamsburg churches, shot putters from Fort Monroe, and Native American chiefs from nearby Tuscarora Nation. After Fort Ewell was abandoned in 1825 following its fall to Indian forces under British Lieutenant Colonel John Forbes Forbes (1777-1850), many settlers moved into nearby Alexandria for new homes orchards and mills that were brought upriver by steamboats. By 1830, about sixty people lived in Hopewell; by 1840 it had shrunk to just ten residents. The small town experienced an influx of refugees after World War II when large numbers of Americans relocated from Europe due to wartime rationing and other factors.
