On December 10th Indian traders in Hopewell were burned by British troops commanded by Major-General Richard Butler during what is now called "The Battle of White Sulphur Springs." In 1865, white settlers began arrive to the area following Reconstruction; they soon constructed mills and large homes that remain today. The town's first hotel was built in 1868 and later renamed the Masonic Lodge after its founder, Drury Lane Freemason George Mason II (1751-1828). In 1924,Hopewell became one of six towns within Roanoke Rapids metropolitan statistical area created when that area was divided between Hampton Roads region ( southeastern Virginia) and Roanoke Valley region (western Virginia). As part of this larger changeover period many small businesses closed or merged into larger ones as Roanoke Rapids grew more industrialized whilehopewell retained its traditional rural character until recently when some Homes have been demolished to make way for Walmart Supercenters

After only two years of operations, Accomack Court System disbanded because no one wanted to live near their county seat where they would have to attend court twice a week!
