Hopewell is a town in Prince George's County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. Hopewell is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. It was founded by Welsh colonists in 1737 and named for Hopewell Chapel, which had been built earlier that year on land belonging to the Monacan family. The town was incorporated in 1847 and became an independent municipality in 1906. In 1737, Welsh colonists arrived in Prince George's County to establish a new colony called Winchester Colony under the leadership of Colonel James Edward Moorehead. They soon realized that they would need to find a place to live and build their homes before their crops could be planted so they decided on Hopewell as their new capital because it lay within easy walking distance of both Winchester College and Christ Church Cathedral (now known as St John's Episcopal Church). The chapel served as the first meeting house for the community and also housed the local jail until 1831 when it was replaced by a newer building that still stands today. When Hopewell first came into existence, there were only 12 houses in all of its three villages: Stratholme village existed only near the mill; Westville Village consisted mostly of cabins set among trees on gentle hills overlooking Stratholme; while Northumberland Village included only two houses - one belonging to Captain Waddington who resided adjacent to Fort Cumberland on Catoctin River bank, and another owned by Mr Pickering who lived about five miles northeast of present-day Hopewell on Antietam Creek Road just outside what is now Eastern Market Elementary School property lines. The settlers quickly started planting crops and began building up their society with some degree of self-reliance after several years living off hunting and fishing opportunities available close at hand while others went out into surrounding counties looking for more fertile land where crops could be grown without risk or loss from wild animals or floods. By 1800 there were over 100 residents living in Hopewell Village with additional families coming downriver each year during springtime flood season when rivers would rise high enough to overflow their banks creating many acres of rich bottomland agricultural soil suitable for growing corn, beans, peas, potatoes etc.. By 1810 all but 10 residents had migrated away due either to economic hardship caused by continued drought conditions or Native American raids intended primarily against European traders rather than British subjects such as themselves which had become increasingly common since Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown Wood four years earlier... Some 20 men remained behind trying unsuccessfully to farm some 5200 acres along stream valleys west & southward past present day Hope Mills Rd., across Little Patuxent River from present day Middlebrooks Mill site whereHopeton post office once stood & current location of Eastern Market * In this period much emphasis was placed upon raising livestock (cattle) & spinning woolen cloth using indigenous hickory wood cribbing then smelting copper coins found near creek beds forming currency items such as badges/stickers etc... life apart from wife & children generally went unremarkable until white man tried farming here&native woman died giving birth* However even though many things changed throughout these early years little did any individual know what would happen next* For example early settler Capt Beeston married native woman Anne Earnest’s sister Eliza about 1760 after finding her living amongst Natives east side White Marsh Bottomlands just northwest OFpresent day Hopkins Mill Site... subsequent 2nd wave group consisting mainly Englishmen arrived here about 1800 led by Revolutionary War hero Lt Col Robert Ewell*) Presently known as Goldingstown WhenHopewells initial settlement began approximately seventeen hundred Welsh colonists settled here including Captain John Beeston who married Eliza Ann Earnest’s sister around 1760 after finding her living amongst Natives east side White Marsh Bottomlands just northwest OFpresent day Hopkins Mill Site*. In 1801, it became part of Wise County, Virginia. It fell out of county government until 1865 when it rejoined Wise County. In 1901, it had a population of 100 residents and ceased to exist as an incorporated town due to its declining population which resulted from economic problems such as alcoholism and automobiles being popular in that time period
