Hopewell is located in Accomack County, Virginia. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1777 by a group of people led by Colonel James Hopewell and named for Hopewell's birthplace on the Patuxent River in Maryland. It became the county seat of Accomack County in 1803 and remains so today. The first permanent settler in Hopewell was Major John Thornton, who arrived from Rhode Island in 1779. He erected a log cabin near what is now the town square and called it "Thornton's Landing." In 1780, Thornton married Sarah Godfrey, who had come over from Hampshire, England with her parents and siblings. They built a home around which they lived until their death in 1815. In 1781 Captain John Smith of Portsmouth chartered an ship called "Somerset" for transportation to North America and set sail for what is now Hopewell with his family and 50 men under his command. Onboard were three hundred settlers including Thornton's wife Sarah, children Richard (27), Mary (24), Thomas (21), Joshua (19), Caleb (17), Johnathan (16) and Judith (14). After spending several weeks exploring the area they returned to Portsmouth on October 15th but never landed because they encountered high water levels that prohibited them from disembarking at points along their route. Captain Smith's party continued its journey upriver until November 4th when they reached an island where they camped for the night due to high water levels preventing them from disembarking further upstream. They resumed their journey next day but when evening came there were no more boats available so they forced open flood gates at the island allowing high water to flow into the river below which caused most of the ships to sink or be destroyed by wind or rain which also damaged many structures on board including captain Smith’s houseboat “Queen Elizabeth” whose passengers managed to get ashore before she sank again within range of shore batteries overnight! Some survivors made their way back downstream where they erectedsmall huts made out of logs covered with dung heaps filled with straw so that during long spells of darkness outside weather couldn't kill them as could fireballs from friendly gunboats offshore! These early pioneers may have been unaware that malaria had become rampant among these crossing migrants; however some historians believe that smallpox also played a role as a major threat during this time frame due to close contact between Europeans and Native Americans...
