Hopewell is a small town in Surry County, Virginia. The population of the town was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Hopewell is part of the Petersburg-Newport News, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hopewell were British traders and travelers who came in search of new land to trade with. In 1607, Sir William Berkeley granted a patent for 640 acres (2 km2) in present-day Hopewell Township to Thomas Fairfax. By 1740, when the Patent was transferred from Fairfax to James Carter III, Hopewell had become an important trading center due to its strategic location on the Roanoke River between Norfolk and Petersburg. In 1803, following the Treaty of Ashland (signed by President James Kinsman),Surry County was created from parts of Stafford and Hanover Counties. As part of this change, Hopewell became one of four towns within Surry County that were not included in the newly formed county seat at Alexandria. In 1812, however, Alexandria officially moved fromsurrycountyline.gov/cgi-bin/www?search=true&qid=R1aP7ZC6ll4&rank=1 into its current location within Surry County after years of lobbying by residents and business owners nearby who felt they were being left out behind in development efforts during Snohomish County's annexation into King George County. When Alexandria reached its peak as a commercial center during Reconstruction following the Civil War (1865–1868), many merchants relocated their businesses to Hopechell due to access to railroad transportation and cheap land prices thereabouts. However, by 1880 only two-thirds of all merchants still headquartered here; most operations then shifted away or closed altogether as technology changed and cheaper alternatives became available elsewhere on Long Island or along coastal states such as Delaware Bay or Carolina Keys acrossthe Potomac River than on Long Island itself where transportation costs became prohibitively high relative to inland values for property same distance downriver.)By 1930 only about 50%of total business had been conducted here since 1865; most activity now takes place outside our town limits primarily through through online sales via AmazonSmile which has greatly reduced shipping times for items arriving directlyfrom vendors worldwide). Hopewell, Virginia is located in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia. The town was originally founded by the Hopewell people in 1784 as a trading post on the Wabash River. In 1801, Hopewell was renamed for General George Washington, and it became an incorporated town in 1834. The town's population grew to over 5,000 by 1890, and it reached its peak population of over 20,000 by 1930. However, due to World War II and other economic hardships, Hopewell's population has fallen since the 1940s. Today, Hopewell is a small community with a few hundred residents that retains some of its historic buildings and businesses. The town began as a trading post on the Wabash River. The first post office was established in 1784, and it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. By 1800, Hopewell had become an incorporated town. The first store opened in 1801 at what is now called Main Street and South Street. By 1830, there were six stores operating in the town. However, due to the war efforts during the American Revolution (1776-83), business dried up during this time period. Business resumed after America's victory in that conflict in 1783. In 1834, General George Washington named Hopewell for him because he felt that it would be an ideal place to raise troops for his proposed military expedition against Mexico City under President James Ketchum (1785-1835). Colonel John Armstrong (1786-1858) also moved from Princeton County to start a cavalry regiment known as "The Haltom Rangers" which would fight against Mexican forces throughout Central America during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Armstrong leftHopewall after only two months when he learned about Ketchum's expedition plans; however, his name lives on through Hopewell's current ZIP code of 23822
Hopewell was founded in 1729 by Captain John Nicholson and his wife, Deborah. The name is derived from the Hopewell Indians who lived there before English settlement. Nicholson was a captain on HMS "John Adams" when he discovered the area in 1729. He named the town after himself and his wife. In 1801, Hopewell became part of Virginia and was made an official county seat. In 1865, it became one of the northernmost counties of Virginia. In 1925, it merged with other neighboring counties to form Prince William County.
