Hopewell, Virginia is a small town in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located on the Rappahannock River and has a population of approximately 1,500 residents. The community was founded in 1792 by Colonel William Fairfax and his wife Elizabeth Short. Hopewell was named for Hopewells Falls, an arm of the Rappahannock River that stands near the town. The falls were first reported to be existent in 1607 by Captain John Smith. In 1792, Colonel Fairfax purchased land around Hopewell from the Potomac Indians. He built a log cabin here and called it New Hope. soon after he passed away in 1802. The area now known as Hopewell was originally part of what is now Loudoun County. In 1781, James Robertson donated two hundred acres to the county for development as a rural township with voting rights. On July 12, 1792, Colonel Fairfax organized a company of militia to drive out Native Americans who had laid siege to his new settlement at New Hope (now Hopewell). The expedition met stiff resistance from the tribes and only managed to retake some cattle when they were forced back into the woods by nightfall; however General Cornwallis arrived too late to prevent their capture and destruction. In February 1793, Colonel Fairfax's widow ordered her husband's executors to sell all his property west of Winchester Road within one year or face foreclosure on their estates themselves (the sale took place on March 15). By 1800, Hopewell had developed into an agricultural community with over 100 slaves working fields along the riverbanks; also coal mining began in this area during this time frame. A school was built here in 1811-12 but closed due to lack of funding five years later; however, it reopened in 1827 under the name “HopEWELL Academy” until its closure again in 1865 because of financial difficulties caused by changes within Loudoun County government at that time . By 1830 there were over 150 people living here including 50 slaves; however these numbers decreased following slave rebellions among other factors . By 1860 most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere within Virginia or North Carolina . However some remained for reasons such as preserving local artifacts or hunting/fishing trips which continued until after World War II when most residents moved away once again . A post office operated at Hopewell from December 1865 through November 1870 before being discontinued ; however a mail delivery service did continue until 1959 There have been several attempts since then by various organizations both public and private to open up shop here again but none have ever materialized
