In 1792, Hopewell was founded by General George Washington and his Regiment of Hunters. The town was named for Thomas Hopewell, a local landowner. In 1801, the first gunsmith in Hopewell was established by John Gwynn. By 1830, the population of Hopewell had increased to over 100 people. In 1846, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill that allowed handguns to be owned by citizens of the Commonwealth. This amendment made Hopewell one of the earliest towns in Virginia to allow handguns. The first handgun using percussion caps as ammunition was created inHopewell in 1868 by Amos Wesson with help from George Hatton. From 1868-1872, many different manufacturers produced handguns in Hopewell using percussion caps as ammunition. A total of 36 different handgun models were produced inHopewell between 1888 and 1902 including six rifles and twenty pistols. By 1911, firearms production had stopped at the original gunsmiths due to World War I and Prohibition intervened; however, several shotguns were still manufactured until after World War II. While guns production resumed after prohibition ended, it slowly declined until 1976 when all firearms production ceased completely at the old mill site due to lack of demand from customers who favored traditional muzzle loading weapons instead

Hopewell is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of theAlexandria, VA– Northern Virginia Micropolitan Statistical Area. Hopewell was founded by an English family in 1754 as Hopetoun on the Rappahannock River. The name derived from ancient Hopi words meaning "place where cattle are pastured." extensions to nearby Arlington and Fredericksburg led to their incorporation as towns in 1873 and 1934 respectively. The first settler in Hopewell was John Atherton who arrived in 1754 with his family from England. He built a log cabin near what is now Market Street and planted cornmeal seeds on the bank of the river for his own use and that of his family. Atherton's son James erected a new house on what is now First Street about 1800 which became known as "Atherton's House". By 1830, several other settlers had arrived including Richard Weese who bought land from Atherton east of Market Street; he laid out streets and built houses which remain today. In 1873, Hopkinsville incorporated as an independent town but it remained adjacent to Hopewell until 1924 when it merged into its larger neighbor According to the 2000 U.S Census there were 1,471 people living in Hopewelltownsend including 801 households and 533 families residing within the unincorporated portions of Prince William County while 2131 people lived inside Alexandria City Limits (including 725 households and 619 families) making it 3/5ths of all Alexandria residents live inside city limits according to this count however only 11% or lessof allHopeville residents work within city limits while over 60% work outside Alexandria City Limits

Hopewell is a small town in Clarke County, Virginia. The population was 1,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg-New Carrollton, VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Hopewell were English colonists who arrived in 1607. They named their new town for Sir Thomas Hopton, an explorer and Secretary of State under James I of England. The original settlers were owners of some land near what is now Hopewell and built a few houses there before moving on to other parts of Virginia. In 1702, a group of Scotsmen from Glasgow settled near the mouth of the Rappahannock River and began to farm the area that would later become Hopewell. John Forbes, Lord Dunmore's commissioner for Indian Affairs, purchased about 2/3rds of the present township from these early settlers in 1712. In 1776, during America's Revolutionary War, General Cornwallis moved his army through Clarke County to attack British forces encamped at Saratoga Springs in New York City. When he reached Hopewell they found it had already been evacuated by its inhabitants due to military action nearby. A few weeks later Cornwallis destroyed much cultural property as part of his campaign against Patriotism throughout central Virginia.. After American independence was declared on July 4th, 1814, President James Kenedy ordered all federal buildings closed because there were no employees available to administer them without spoilage caused by war material stored inside! So General Robert E Lee ordered all but two barrels (of powder) stored within Castle Point along with food supplies and munitions! About 10% or so was spoiled while being unloaded but most turned out just fine! On November 15th 1830 Captain John Smith sailed upriver from Jamestown Ferry ashore at Fort Monroe where he harpooned three large sea otters which he cooked over an open fire until they boiled; then he took them back upstream with him on board his ship Discovery for market purposes His cook also caught ten fish including four bream off Wasp Island which weighed over six pounds each He offered them for sale but no one wanted any so he put them away until somebody could take care of them There are still several interesting artifacts associated with this event such as two bowls made from leadweighted iron salvaged from HMS Victory during her bombardment of Norfolk Harbor in 1855 combined with an old weather forecast book dated 1798 Now located at Muskingum University Museum among other items
Hopewell was founded in 1711 by Captain John Smith. The first white settlers were the Moore family, who built a cabin on the site in 1713. In 1718, Colonel James Moores erected a small fortification on the hill overlooking Hopewell which served as a trading post for some time before being abandoned in 1725. In 1802, Hopewell became part of Virginia and was incorporated as a town. The population increased rapidly during the early 1800s due to cotton plantations and agricultural production, but heavy military presence and development led to social unrest and economic decline starting in the mid-19th century. By 1870, only 9% of the population remained living within its limits while most of the land had been annexed by other towns or counties.
