In 1917-1920 a new hospital was constructed which served as both primary care facility for residents as well as providing medical supplies to surrounding communities during World War I In 1968-1969 a $12 million renovation project occurred which included adding more than 50 acres (24 hectares) of parkland including an amphitheater capable of seating 2,500 people In 1991-1992 another $10 million renovation project occurred which included addition of an indoor arena/gym/laser lab complex as well as enhancements to water systems and streetlights

The title for Mayor was first given to John Waddington in 1865 because of his election as Mayor in 1858 which coincided with Virginia's admission into the Union as a state in July 1861 The Town Hall today can be traced back to 1854 when it was built as part of a larger project called “The Towne Center” which aimed to improve life for its citizens by providing them with better facilities such aslibraryand schoolDistricthall; Improve public transportation options including an aqueduct that ran throughtown; Build new homes; and Construct churches as well As numerous other civic improvements In 1911, Hopewell became one of eight towns in Virginia designated by Governor Andrew Johnson as sites for experimental farming programs under Project Sonora which aimed to improve soil quality around nation-wide agricultural production centers After World War II, many businesses closed down due to changes in zoning laws enacted by newly elected Governors Mamie Eisenhower and Robert Byrd who were determined not only to promote suburban development but also create jobs within touristed areas like Charlottesville or Alexandria However despite these efforts most residents continued living within town limits until at least 1972 when all towns except Fairfax were annexed into Richmond City Limits
