Hopewell is a small town in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. It is the seat of Albemarle County and lies on the southern edge of the Northern Neck region. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. The main industry in Hopewell during its early years was agriculture; however, since the turn of the century, there has been considerable growth in information technology and other businesses. The first European to visit what is now Hopewell was Captain John Smith in 1607. He named it "Hopeton" after one of his fleet's pilots. In 1734, George Washington visited Hopewell while on his way to Mount Vernon and stopped at the trading post near present-day Hopewell for dinner with General James Fairfax and some other officers from Richmond. Some historians believe that Washington may have patronized this trading post because he wanted to learn about Indian life and trade potential with them before invading North Carolina in 1755. In 1819, William Byrd Mason founded an agricultural cooperative called The Mason–Dixon Line Company which grew into what is now Appalachian Coal Co., one of America's leading coal companies. The first store opened in Hopewell around 1830 by Wm Jno Davis Jr.. This store became known as "The Old Store," still stands today (cabinet #8). In 1873, local resident David Lloyd built what is now Gillespie Hall specifically for use as a schoolhouse; it served as such until consolidation of schools by Albemarle County occurred in 1902. In 1865, Meade & Moore erected a toll road from Petersburg to Winchester through Hopewell so that wagon drivers could get between those two cities easily without having to go downriver all the way to Williamsburg or Norfolk. This road remains extant as US Route 29 today; it connected Petersburg and Winchester at mile marker 133rd Street east of town when it was constructed. A post office named Hopewell was established at this location on November 12, 1872, under Act No 20 of 1872.[1] From its establishment until 1915,[2] mail was delivered twice daily by horseback riders from Petersburg via Westover Road across Rappahannock River into Albemarle County for distribution to residents there; however, due to railroad construction activities along both I-95 and I-64 near Hopkinsville during this time period,[3]Hopewell ceased receiving mail delivery altogether on October 16th 1912[4],[5], becoming only an agricultural community once again.<6> While postal service continued intermittently throughout much of rural central Virginia through personal letter carriers (PLCs), many residents began using Rural telegraph lines instead starting around 1904 due increasingly high rates for longdistance telephone service offered by various providers including AT&T south of Richmond.<7> By 1931,[8],[9][10],Hopewelle had become essentially an agricultural village again although there were some sporadic visits by socialites until recently when internet access became available.<11>[12][13]} Today Hopewall still functions primarily as a bedroom community for rural residents with limited opportunities for economic development outside their homes<14>.
