It is known for its large number of historical homes and churches, as well as its annual Old Friends Meeting which takes place in October. The town also has a small shopping center and several restaurants. The first people to settle in Herndon were farmers who arrived during the late 1800s. The town was incorporated in 1881, and became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to markets. In 1907, the city of Alexandria was founded nearby, making Herndon an important crossroads for trade between the two cities. By 1930, however, agricultural production had replaced manufacturing as the mainstay of the local economy. When World War II began, many residents chose not to participate in wartime production because they felt it would be too difficult or too dangerous; however, many others did choose to work in factories or on farms across the county. As war continued to worsen throughout 1945 and 1946, some residents decided that enough was enough and sought political asylum in neighbouring jurisdictions such as Arlington or Frederickburg. Only after much negotiation did Herndon finally become part of Fairfax County upon victory by United States over Japan at Hiroshima in 1945 did farming resume as a major economic activity here again. In recent years there has been growth within the local food industry thanks to advances made with genetically modified crops; however, most jobs here still require manual labor such as farmhands or construction workers

Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 19,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1786 by George Herndon and his family from Hampshire, England. In 1801, he donated land to the town for development as a shopping and agricultural center on the Potomac River near modern Herndon Heights. The name honors him and his wife Sarah Randolph Whitman (1761-1834). In 1838, John Marshall Webb purchased 4 miles (6 km) of riverfront property in what is now Herndon Heights from George Herndon for $2,500. By 1840, Webb had developed this land into an extensive farmstead with 2 churches – one Greek Orthodox and one Methodist – a men's academy and a schoolhouse. He also built two large wharves on the river which remain today: Webb Wharf on the north bank and Herndon Wharf on the south bank just upstream from where present-day Arlington Cemetery stands. In 1861-1865, duringthe American Civil War, many residents of Fairfax County sided with Confederate forces over Union troops because they believed that slavery was wrong but marriage between slaveowners and their slaves was legal under Confederate law . Many of these residents moved to Northern Virginia after the war ended to become white supremacists who supported Reconstruction efforts in America following its collapse . The community's only black resident until 1964 was Reva Cason (1915-2006), who worked as a church usher at her mother's church in nearby Alexandria before moving to Herndon to become active in local politics . In 1984–1985, she spearheaded an effort to have all public schools openen throughout Fairfax County so African Americans could learn standard English instead of theirAfrican languages which were still used by some poor whites . She also helped organize protests against government plans designed to consolidate more than 50 counties into one larger agency called " Loudoun Authority District No 10" which she felt would benefit only white farmers while detrimentally affecting African Americans
Herndon was founded in 1749 by Colonel Edmund Herndon and his wife, Catherine. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, with a population of about 100 people in 1751. In 1800, the population had grown to over 1,000 residents. In 1815, Herndon was named in honor of James H. Herndon, an American politician and general who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town continued to grow until the late 19th century when it began to decline as a result of various factors such as economic fluctuations and increasing competition from other rural communities around the area. However, some efforts have been made to revitalize the town since then including a campaign by local officials to get attention from the National Park Service for potential development within the town limits.
