Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Fairfax County after Alexandria, Arlington Heights, Sterling and Falls Church. The first residents of what would become Herndon were families of English Baptists who migrated from Southwark parish in London in 1751. In 1802, James Herndon founded what would become the first large cotton plantation in Virginia; his slave ship "Belle Isle" brought 400 pounds of cotton from Africa to be processed into cloth and textiles here at Herndon Plantation (now known as the Heritage Foundation). From this initial success, James Herndon & Company grew to become one of America’s leading cotton producers – shipping more than 1 million barrels of raw cotton through their ports of call between 1810 and 1830. One result was that many local families became rich enough to support themselves singlehandedly – an ethos that continues today at nearby Glen Allen Mills where many successful business people are also descendants of those early settlers. In 1870, George Washington Carver moved his family from Savannah, Georgia to settle near present-day Springfield Armory where he began working for General Richard Ewell during the American Civil War as a cattle buyer and butcher. After Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 following General Robert E Lee’s surrender unconditionally all Confederate forces in Virginia lost their justification for continuing resistance against Union occupation by becoming “loyal” instead suddenly foregoing any legal rights they may have had under state law (a process known as “secession”).
