Gun targets in Herndon, Virginia date back to the early 1800s. The first recognized target at Herndon was a blacksmith’s shop located on Fourth Street. In 1825, Dr. John Gregg erected a small frame target stand on Court House Grounds which remained in use until the early 1900s. In 1829, Major General James Longstreet visited Herndon and noticed the numerous gun pits around town and decided to make it his homebase for rifle practice. The first shooting range opened in 1830 and was used by Colonel Nathaniel Bacon of Alexandria Regiment. On December 5, 1836, Captain Samuel Dillard erected a large frame target stand on the north side of Church Street which served as an outdoor firing ground for several years until its destruction by fire in 1851. During the American Civil War (1861- 1865), many artillery batteries were stationed around Herndon including Confederate Battery No.(2) It is interesting to note that all Confederate cannon were hauled offsite for disassembly and reassembly at various gun pits throughout Fairfax County during this time period! In 1861, when Northern forces marched into Richmond following the issue of Emancipation Proclamation, they discovered Union firearms stored at various locations in Fairfax County including Gun Pits #1 & 2 on Centreville Road North near Manassas Valley Parkway entrance. After days of fighting and carnage nearby, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered their surrender at Appomattox Court House with cannons still pointed skyward! Many civilian casualties ensued due to Confederate sniper fire from thesegun pits! Today there are few if any active gun ranges left remaining within Fairfax County but some interesting history can be found at Gun Pits #1 & 2 located just outside of Herndon on Centreville Road North where NRA members often congregate for target practice or weekend trips!

Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 24,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Alexandria, DC–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Herndon has been named one of "America's 10 most livable towns" by Forbes magazine and has been rated as one of America's top 10 small towns by U.S. News & World Report. The land that now Herndon was first settled in 1776 by men from Prince George's County, Maryland under the leadership of British Colonel John Ferguson. Colonel Ferguson had served with distinction in the American Revolution and had a land grant from King George III for 400 acres (1 km²). In 1794, General James McLean granted 1,000 acres (4 ha) further east to Colonel Nathaniel Bacon for his services during the revolution and also for his help in organizing Indian resistance against British forces later that year. In 1814, Thomas radius developed two blocks of what would become Herndon Plaza on Tryon Street between First Avenue and West End Road because he thought it would be an ideal location for a market town center given its close proximity to transportation options such as roads and streams. After years of development work on Tryon Square failed to bring much success to the townspeople – mainly due to competition from more established towns in neighboring Fairfax County – they decided to rename their square after President James Kefauver during Reconstruction era efforts to revive rural areas nationwide following the end of slavery in 1865. The name change occurred in 1868 when Congress renamed all U S states after former Presidents who were deceased; this included Virginia’s Kefauver Square which became locally known as “Kefauver Park” after him]. During World War II, herndon played an important role within both war effort through its production of munitions and other items essential for military operations such as tanks and artillery pieces; however little is known about its civilian population who supported these activities either directly or indirectly through businesses run by local entrepreneurs like Harry Laughlin or David Manges Sr.. The original village measuring only a few rods square was built on a hillock overlooking the Potomac River. By 1871, the population of Herndon had grown to over 2,000 people. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee and his army passed through the town during their march from Harper's Ferry to Winchester, Virginia. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered General Philip Sheridan to cross the Potomac River at Monticello and encampment near Herndon. Sheridan ordered his men to burn all crops in the village so that no food would be available for Confederate forces retreating from Appomattox Court House following the Battle of Gettysburg. One result of this action was that many residents fled to nearby Arlington Cemetery before things got too hot there also were reports of cattle being stolen from fields west of town which led some members of Congress to call for stricter regulations on military encampments in rural areas
