Herndon is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 25,898 at the 2000 census. It is located in the Northern Neck of Virginia and is part of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The Town of Herndon was founded in 1792 by General James Haddock and his wife Elizabeth Dixon during the American Revolution. The first settler in Herndon was John Herndon, who built a log cabin on what is now Park Road. In 1814, Colonel Robert Ewell established himself as a landowner and developer in central Fairfax County with holdings that included present-day Herndon Township and parts of Southside and Centreville villages adjacent to it. On July 15, 1861, after Confederate forces sacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina; Fort Sumter became an open dumping ground for Confederate munitions supplies; Union troops moved into Alexandria to protect it from Confederate looters – including Private William Tilton of the 1st Regiment Virginia Volunteers (7thVa), who later testified that he helped dismantle one cannon at Fort Sumter before its destruction – President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Winfield Scott to order all military stores off Sumter at once so that it might not fall into Confederate hands. Superintendent Thomas Jordon wrote: "I went toGeneral Scott - told him I thought there must be some mistake connected with these munitions - he said no - they were delivered here yesterday direct from Charleston." On October 9th, 1861 five days after Lincoln's proclamation ordering all military stores off Sumter (and one day after South Carolina seceded from the United States), General Scott reported:[1] "All stocks having been destroyed on board this fort.... We have lost heavily here .... Our loss will amount to $125,-000…. If we could only get back our guns we would regain our former position." In 1870 Wm Henson organized Georgetown University's first students as students of agriculture near Mount Vernon while their professors attended classes at George Mason University; when Mason left for good in 1872 Wm Henson followed him to become headmaster of GWU's School of Agriculture where he remained until his death in 1923. Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr., pastor(s) associated with Ebenezer Baptist Church #4242 which stands today on Forest Lawn Cemetery Our Lady Of Loretto Parish also played an important role early onWm Henson had donated land for religious instruction but because Alexandria did not yet have schools for black children Wm Henson set up homeschooling programs using white children as models until 1938 when Booker T Washington opened Tuskegee Institute which eventually led to African American education nationwide through institutions like Harvard College

Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,858 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax. The town was founded by George Washington in 1791 as part of Botetourt County and named for British general Sir Henry Herndon. The first post office was established in 1795, and the first school was built in 1800. In 1801, Herndon became a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1849, a group of farmers from Staffordshire set up a farmstead near Herndon to grow tobacco. They were followed by other farmers who developed Tobacco Camps around Herndon beginning in 1850-1851 which served as homes for farmers and their families during harvest time. The original town hall was built between 1853 and 1854 to serve as a meeting place for the Farmers' Association meetings which took place here weekly until 1957 when it burned down. Dentist Drury opened his practice here in 1860 after moving from Alexandria’s Second Street Hospital where he had been working since 1848. He soon became one of local legend because of his successful treatment of diseases such as smallpox and yellow fever that were rampant then or still are today in this area due to lack of immunity among certain populations like African Americans who have no natural immunity thereto From 1865-1968 Drury also ran an agricultural cooperative with 30 acres (12 hectares) per family called "The Grist Mill". This mill produced flour, sugar syrup, bacon grease, butter and cheese until it closed its doors due to damage sustained by fire on October 1st 1968 . Today you can find remnants of this old mill located off I-495 just south of Potomac Avenue north side exit #129B
