After that campaign, he returned home and resumed his law career; however, he never lost interest in politics or war policy and remaindered into service with both sides throughout the war. Herndon was elected to another two terms in 1870-72 before retiring from public life due to health concerns; however, he continued to be involved with Republican Party affairs until his death in 1885 aged 83 years old. His legacy includes being one of Virginias most powerful political figures during its times of crisis following secession and civil war; also noteing that he is considered one of Virginias greatest Generals due largely to his experience leading Union armies into combat against Confederates

He erected a store and Post Office on North Main Street in 1827 and named it after himself and his father-in-law General James Herndon who had served under him during the American Civil War. In 1865, Arlington Heights successfully resisted efforts to merge with neighboring Fairfax County until 1990 when it accepted annexation into Fairfax County The community experienced heavy development between 1870 and 1920 due to its location close to Loudoun Valley Railwayroads; this resulted in large numbers of people moving into or setting up businesses here during that time period including attorneys, doctors, bankers and other professionals who needed easy access to transportation hubs like Alexandria/Washington D.C., also providing jobs for many locals who could not leave their homes because of economic reasons such as prohibition or World War I shortages of munitions
