Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 11,387 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Fairfax County after Alexandria. The name comes from Sir Edmund Herndon, 1st Baronet (1802-1886), an English statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1855 to 1858. The first white people to settle in what is now Herndon were French colonists who named the area "Henderson" after one of their number. In 1772, the British burned down Henderson's house and plantations for not paying taxes that were due on land that had been leased by them to the French colonists. In 1824, Robert Epps built a cabin on Topock Run Road near present day Herndon Elementary School. This became known as Epps' Mill because it produced flour for local families and also stored lumber and other materials used in building homes and businesses in Herndon Valley during its early years. In 1828, James Fenton purchased 4 acres of land east of present day Topock Run Road from John Aiken for $100+. He began developing this property into what would become known as Fenton's Farmstead Village which included his home, store and school. The village remained operational until about 1840 when it was destroyed by fire caused by lightning strike while being operated as a farm storage complex. The community of Fenton's Farmstead Village was eventually replaced by what is today Herndon Township when it was organized under Virginia law on December 15th, 1792 following the cession of Maryland to Virginia via an act of Congress which included all then slaveholding Southern states except Georgia and Florida which had already seceded from the Union). At that time there were only 8 residents living within limits defined by township boundaries: 4 men (including James Fenton) residing inside the original boundaries established by grant; 2 boys living at nearby White Hall Plantation; 1 girl living with her parents outside limits established by grant; 1 boy living with his grandparents inside limits set forth by purchase including those located just northeast of modern day Herndontowne while they farmed land adjacent to their plantation holdings; 3 girls (2 daughters and 1 granddaughter) living with their mothers within limits determined by purchase or occupancy within Limits 7 & 8 closest to centerline so designated; 5 slaves born between November 25th & December 2d each year 1800 – 1860 lived within township lines but remained available for sale or transport away from home

Herndon, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County. Herndon is located on the Potomac River and is bordered by Arlington to the north and west, Alexandria to the south and east, and Centreville to the southeast. The land that now makes up Herndon was acquired from Native Americans in 1729 by General Robert Ewell during his expedition against the Powhatan Confederacy. In 1802, George Washington purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land north of present-day Herndon from Nicholas Mylius for $2,500. The grant included an area that would become today's central business district of Herndon. At this time there were only two houses in what is now Herndon—one built by John Taylor in 1783 as part of Colonel James Armistead's gift to local leaders after he captured Fort Necessity during a military campaign against the native confederacy; and another house built about 1800 by Captain John Waddell as part of Waddell's Purchase from Governor Thomas Fairfax for $6,000. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant created Fairfax County out of portions of Loudoun and Prince William counties. Most residents in these new counties lived near their ancestral homes in those original counties or within easy driving distance of then-towns such as Manassas Junction and Restenstown on Route 1A (now I-95). As development moved away from these original towns towards newer suburbs elsewhere in Northern Virginia over time, some people who had grown accustomed to living close enough to their ancestral homes decided it was time for them to move too. So when Congress passed legislation creating Arlington County separate from Loudoun and Prince William Counties on July 16, 1948 it also created a new town called Herndon within Arlington limits—the first town ever incorporation within any U.S. state). On December 6 following that same year's general election result which saw Republican Harry Byrd win renomination as one half of junior United States Senator from West Virginia through redistricting due to vacancies caused by Redeemer Presbyterian Church vowing not to seek re-election under no circumstances whatsoever because they opposed Byrd running again (Byrd had won both open seats), local officials announced plans for a merger between Arlington Heights/Herndon Township (the northernmost section still administered by Loudoun County) with adjacent Bishop College Elementary School District No 2 into one municipality effective January 1st 1949 under name "HerndON". This event served notice throughout Fairfax County that although physically separated from its more populous neighbor across Route 1A may be politically Armstrong Park while economically wealthy Bethesda remains immune thereto having been exempted form taxation but enjoying all per diem services Rendezvous Marina Bowling Alley has access rights etc., nevertheless citizens thereof are autonomous politically speaking despite feeling like second class citizens since municipal boundaries have changed very little since creation
