Herndon, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington- Falls Church, DC-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been inhabited by humans since 10K BC when settlers from Babylon arrived in search of new land to farm. Herndon was founded on May 14th, 1795 by Major General George Washington and Colonel James Herndon as a small station on the Potomac River for his horse and wagon caravan. In 1802 the town site was bought by Josiah Bartlett from Thomas Jackson for $2,500USD. In 1812 Herndon became an incorporated village under the name of Alexandria after Alexandria, Virginia became a state in 1819. In 1861 Herndon was made the seat of Fairfax County following the secession of Confederate States of America from the United States during The American Civil War. In 1865 it merged with Arlington Heights to form one municipality which continued to be called Fairfax County until 1971 when it became independent again under its current name (although most residents continue to identify as being within Fairfax County). In 1870s many wealthy planters established plantations here including John Marshall McLean and his son Nicholas who would become one of America's most popular Presidents due to their role in creating key aspects of social welfare programs like food stamps during that period; He also donated land for what is now George Mason University and helped found Arlington National Cemetery as well as numerous other institutions/projects throughout his life. Of note are two mansions located in this area: The Montresor House which once served as President George Washington's official home during his time as Commander-in-Chief; and Park Lane which currently houses both VA State Capitol Building & Headquarters for Arlington National Cemetery - both structures were completed prior to McLean's death in 1907). A large number of immigrants also settled here during this time including Germans (many coming through Frederick Douglass' abolitionist organization), Irishmen (large numbers coming through Emmett Till's murder trial), Italians (coming through waves of Ziegfeld Follies performances) among others; some remaining residents still speak their original language while others have learned English or some other tongue along with living wages & free healthcare today!
