Herndon is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 10,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Herndon is located on the Potomac River and includes the villages of Herndon and Reston. The first permanent settler in what is now Herndon was James Blair who arrived in 1786 from Glasgow, Scotland. He established a small farm about four miles east of today's town center and named it Blair's Mills after his father, Alexander Blair, Sr.. In 1824, John Taylor settled on a tract of land that he called "Taylor's Mill," which later became known as Herndon Village. For many years (1830-1920), all residents of Herndon were farmers; however, during World War II (1939-1945), most people working for local government also moved to nearby Alexandria to work in various military installations. Helden Fenton purchased 640 acres near present day downtown Herndon in 1865 from James Blair and began operations as a distillery manufacturing whiskey under the name "Fenton's Whisky." The company originally produced two types of spirit: bourbon and rye Whiskey. However, distillation became difficult due to the presence ofirling water stones used to achieve a high enough pressure while still developing new technology for rotarydistillation prior to Prohibition). After Prohibition ended in 1933, Helden Fenton lost its liquor license but continued distributing beer until 1984 when it closed its doors for good....................................................
