In 1860, construction began on what is now Union Station which served as the local transportation hub for settlers and travelers arriving or departing from Washington D.C., as well as businesses located along Prince Street (now Independence Avenue). The brick building still stands today and remains an important fixture in local life; it has been used as a polling place for both federal elections and local government elections dating back to 1923 when it first served as the site of county courtrooms under Fairfax County’s then-Planetary System governing system.
