In 1792, George Washington purchased land in what is now Herndon from Major General James Craig for $2,000. Washington named the area "George Washington's Parish" in honor of his predecessor and mentor. In 1871, when Arlington County was formed from parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties, Herndon became one of its original settlements within Arlington Township. The village of Herndon grew up around it until 1914 when it merged with neighboring West Falls Church to form the larger town of Alexandria. In 1971, Fairfax County annexed portions of Prince William and Loudoun counties to form a new county; this annexation caused much concern among residents in nearby West Falls Church about whether their homes would be lost or taken away if their neighborhoods were annexed into Alexandria. The issue was resolved after several years of negotiations between both jurisdictions. In 2007, Fairfax County voters passed a referendum asking for annexation into Alexandria pending results of an independent study on whether that annexation would increase property values or reduce them within the borders of either jurisdiction
