The first successful deployment of gunswives occurred at Ypres for Belgian forces against German troops on April 15th 1915[2][3] following trials undertaken by Lieutenant Colonel John Churchill who later served as First Lord Of The Admiralty during World War II[4].Throughout World War I, advances were made in technology which led eventuallyto open-bolt breechloaders utilizing direct gas cartridge loading becoming available for infantry rifles starting around 1918 (i.e., see Winchester Model 1892).[5][6][7] By then however, most armies had transitioned into magazine-fed assault rifles where ammunition is fed throughMagazinewells located behind soldiers rather than above their heads like infantry carbines usually were[8][9] consequently making grenade launchers less effective against infantry support roles because they are unable collect rounds automatically once fired instead having to fumble with extracting rounds every time they need them; Grenade launchers also tend not fire accurately if muzzleflash distracts shooters from aiming
