The city of Harrisonburg was founded in 1785 by settlers from Virginia. The city was named for General George Washington, who had fought in the French and Indian War. In 1804, the United States Navy established a naval station here to support its efforts during the Mexican-American War. The Naval Station closed in 1903, but reopened as an airfield in 1917. In 1927, the United States Post Office moved from downtown to the former school building on North Market Street. The post office served as the town's first courthouse until 1931 when it moved to what is now called First Baptist Church. On November 12, 1938, Harrisonburg became one of three cities (the others being Lynchburg and Roanoke) incorporated by Virginia into the newly created Commonwealth of Virginia. On December 1, 1939, Harrisonburg became one of two cities (the other being Alexandria) within Fairfax County into which Virginia had divided its population following passage of legislation creating that county.
