Upon his return, he recommended that the town be rechristened "Harrisonburg" in honor of General Jackson's visit and investment in its growth. The City of Harrisonburg was incorporated on July 1st 1907 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly following a vote by citizens on September 7th 1906 authorized by Act No 573 (1907). At that time it had a population of 2,564 residents; however its annexation by Roanoke River Valley brought its population up to 8,711 within six years! The first post office opened in 1905; it closed due to lack of mail service in 1925 but reopened under new name “Harrisonburg” on October 12th 1925 after renaming all other post offices too! The 1915-1920s were decades characterized by heavy importation from neighboring states due mostlyto raw materials needed for munitions production during World War I including coal from Kentucky Coal Company mines located just outside Roanoke River Valley . One result was increased joblessness among local workers because transportation costs were much higher than those experienced anywhere else nearby! Ford Motor Company plant employees who could not find work elsewhere increasingly resorted to prostitution which became known locally as “the Ford Girls” because they worked out at their plant during lunch hours! However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Harrisonburg served as one of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's headquarters. After Union troops captured Petersburg in 1865, civilian life recommenced but soon resumed its decline when slavery was abolished nationwide in 1865.
